Introduction

The purpose of this page is to provide further information regarding the provision of Class F cover in accordance with the recommendations of BS 5306-8:2000. Readers are referred to the British Standard itself for full details and reminded that this is a summary only.

Throughout, references to the pertinent parts of the British Standards and/or other legislation have been included as footnotes.

Further Detail for Class F Cover
  • All deep fat frying situations should be covered by either Class F extinguishers1 or a fixed system (as set out below):

Class F Risk Cover Required2
Surface area not in excess of 0.11m² One 75F extinguisher
Surface area not in excess of 0.4m² Two 75F extinguishers
Surface area in excess of 0.4m² Fixed system is required

Please note that 0.11m² = 1 sq ft, or a rectangular area 0.3×0.36m (or 30×36cm, 12"×14"), or a circular area of diameter 0.37m (or 37cm, 14½").
The larger area, 0.4m² = 4sq ft, or a rectangular area 0.3×1.33m (or 30×133cm, 1'×4'), or a circular area of diameter 0.71m (or 71cm, 28").

  • For fats & cooking oil hazards other than deep fat frying situations, other methods (e.g. fire blankets) may be suitable alternatives where the situation warrants. In such cases, the reader is referred to the applicable British Standards and the manufacturers instructions for those other methods. In all other case, class F extinguishers or a fixed system should be provided as above3.
  • Due to the multiplicity of hazards generally present in kitchens, class F extinguishers should be supplied that are also capable of dealing with class A hazards. In such cases, the size of the extinguisher should be decided by the larger of the class A and class F requirements3.
